"Ashheart" Martin is an eighth-level wizard and old acquaintance of Clark who discovers the Information Plane and initiates and leads its war.13512 He studies entropy increase and heat death, has reached the limit of the eighth level, and wields the Ashheart Flames, which annihilate everything they touch.11 After the information beings' surrender he enters a seclusion of ten-odd years to digest the Entropy Reduction Law.17

Background¶
Martin looks early forties, with short gray-white hair, red ember-like eyes and a plain gray robe.1 He studies entropy increase and heat death, has reached the limit of the eighth level, and needs an entropy-reduction race to fill the last piece of the puzzle, an improvement within the eighth level rather than a ninth-level advance.12 He found the Information Plane only because his field of knowledge is special, chose it on purpose, and every high-level wizard knew it; he rotated off the very front line long ago and rarely acts, because his flames leave no spoils.12 He refuses to describe ninth-level wizards, likening it to not wanting a child to see too cruel a life.12
