Viola is a silver-haired Noren Workshop witch, Clark's chief disciple and Jie Ming's Senior Sister, an outstanding graduate who abandoned alchemy for potioncraft.¹⁵¹⁰¹ Known as the Witch of Pain, she takes a morbid delight in the suffering of others and wields the Law of Pain, chosen over the Life rule on the eve of her advancement.¹⁴¹⁶²³ On the Flame-Frost Plane she leapt from the third level straight to the sixth on a living plane's pain feedback, a breakthrough that left her in debt for over a thousand years.¹⁹⁶⁶⁹⁷ She rules a plane of her own with a plant-people legion and is rated a genius second only to Clark; in the war against the Behemoth Alliance she dies once, revives through a Substitute Death Doll, and advances to the seventh level on the pain of her own death.⁹¹¹²⁰¹²⁴¹²⁵

Background¶

From her earliest memories Viola enjoyed watching insects and frogs die under her fingers, and at the academy she became a double genius of the biology school and the pain school.¹⁴ Her alchemy talent was poor, limited to inorganic matter, so she refused both schools' offers and relearned potioncraft from zero to satisfy her interest within the law, graduating as an outstanding Noren Workshop student.⁵¹⁴ While still second-level she amassed a fortune beyond many fourth-level wizards and bought a strand of the Pain rule through Clark, which made her infamous.²³

She appears with long silver-gray hair, eyes variously described as ice-blue, silver-gray and pale green, and robes of deep blue, white, dark purple or black and gold.¹³⁶¹⁷⁶⁹⁶ Elegant on the surface and "twisted inside," she savors the pain of the powerful more as she grows stronger, yet prepares anxiously for her friends' rainy days.⁵⁰⁶¹ She drifts the void for several thousand years with no plane of her own until she claims one, and keeps herself poor as a closed loop of pain.⁸¹⁸⁴⁹¹
